En 3 países del continente americano se lanzó la campaña Latinoamérica Ruge por el Yaguareté, una iniciativa para promover la conciencia sobre la protección de esta especie, su hábitat y los corredores que atraviesan el continente, desde el sur de Estados Unidos hasta el norte de Argentina.
Argentina, 19 de julio, 2024 – La agencia global de medios UM y la organización internacional de conservación ambiental, WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), unen fuerzas para lanzar una campaña destinada a la protección del yaguareté, con impacto en todo el continente americano. Bajo la iniciativa Impact Day (Día de Impacto), colaboradores de UM junto a representantes de WCS, desarrollaron actividades en Argentina, Chile y Colombia.
En Argentina, la propuesta se desarrolló el viernes 19 de julio en Temaikèn, en donde a través de un stand y charlas informativas a cargo de especialistas de WCS y el Bioparque, se brindó información a los visitantes acerca del yaguareté y su crucial papel en la conservación de los bosques y selvas de nuestro continente.
Paralelamente a esta activación, se desplegará una campaña en medios de comunicación, redes sociales y vía pública, para alcanzar un impacto real y significativo entre los ciudadanos de las grandes ciudades de la región que aún desconocen la relevancia de ciertos felinos en la conservación de los ecosistemas.
El yaguareté es el mayor depredador terrestre de América. Es una especie clave para mantener la salud de los ambientes naturales, ya que ayuda a regular la población de otros animales más pequeños, de los cuales se alimenta, como pecaríes, ciervos y tapires en su distribución argentina. Su supervivencia es un indicador de la salud de bosques y sabanas, pues necesitan grandes territorios para subsistir, lo que implica que proteger a esta especie significa conservar amplias extensiones de territorio conectados en todo el continente.

La conservación del yaguareté requiere, principalmente, proteger sus habitats y los corredores que los conectan por un lado, y frenar la caza furtiva y comercio ilegal de sus partes por el otro.
“Uno de los retos más grandes que enfrentamos quienes buscamos proteger la vida silvestre en Latinoamérica es la falta de recursos para ampliar las áreas protegidas y evitar amenazas como la deforestación, la ganadería no sostenible, y la caza ilegal de grandes mamíferos, que restringen cada vez más el espacio de movilidad del yaguareté”, mencionó el Dr.Esteban Payán, Coordinador de grandes felinos en WCS.
Por su parte, Christina Dieb Faour, Presidente de UM para Latinoamérica, mencionó que “el yaguareté es una especie que nos une como latinoamericanos, este gran felino recorre nuestro territorio sin importar las fronteras, y se ha convertido en un símbolo para las culturas indígenas desde México hasta Argentina desde hace miles de años. Por estas razones, UM se suma a las iniciativas de WCS para impulsar su trabajo por la conservación de la vida silvestre y conseguir que los jaguares sigan perteneciendo a nuestros territorios”.
