Positive Nature

More than 50% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on nature, and most companies depend directly or indirectly on natural resources throughout their value chains, according to the World Economic Forum. Economic growth and rapid development are placing unprecedented pressure on the Earth’s resources, leading to climate, health, and biodiversity crisis. This also poses a challenge for the business sector, as it negatively impacts long-term investment returns and financial sustainability.

That is why it is important for development to be accompanied by an appreciation of nature and its ecosystem services. Protecting productive landscapes and the life that support requires consolidating a series of conservation strategies -including preservation, restoration, and sustainable use- that involve different sectors -public, private, scientific, and local communities- and are implemented through innovative tools that enable effective and sustained management over time.

The Nature Positive paradigm represents a new approach to working with and connecting to the natural environment to reduce biodiversity loss and generate additional benefits for nature at the landscape scale. This approach aims to ensure that human activities with significant impacts on nature go beyond mere mitigation and contribute comprehensively to biodiversity conservation and human well-being.

Our actions are guided by WCS’s extensive global track record and the goals set forth in the Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity; the Convention on Climate Change and the Convention to Combat Desertification; the National Biodiversity Strategy and its Action Plan; as well as national and local biodiversity legislation.

How do we work?

  • We provide advice on developing biodiversity strategies and plans for provincial governments, government agencies, and local authorities, integrating conservation and sustainable use into public policy planning.
  • We assist authorities in developing regulations to improve standards for environmental assessment procedures related to biodiversity, ensuring their implementation within their jurisdiction.
  • We enter into cooperation agreements with trade associations in the hydrocarbon and mining industries, key sectors in the energy transition and drivers of change toward a nature-positive vision.
  • We support companies in designing biodiversity action plans from the early stages of project design to prevent, reduce, restore, and ultimately offset any potential residual negative impacts on biodiversity, with measurable and transparent results.
  • We organize meetings and workshops for companies, seeking to promote the Nature Positive approach and potential implementation mechanisms within each organization.
  • We participate in events across various business sectors to help companies understand the Nature Positive guidelines and integrate a commitment to biodiversity into their organizational culture.
