Preserving Argentina's last remaining caldén forest and prioritizing its conservation
This iconic forest environment is in central Argentina, on one of the most active agricultural frontiers in the Pampas region. Large extensions of forests, savannas, and grasslands provide the main habitat for hundreds of species, several of which are vulnerable or endangered, such as the Chaco eagle, yellow cardinal, and pampas deer. Maras, vizcachas, rheas, foxes, pumas, and guanacos also coexist in this unique environment. This ecosystem still has high ecological integrity, so its conservation could make important contributions to climate change mitigation.
Challenges
Seventy percent of the remaining native caldén forest is in the province of La Pampa. It is one of the most threatened ecosystems in Argentina, due to causes such as shrub encroachment and uncontrolled fires. It is also threatened by the presence of exotic and invasive species of flora and fauna that jeopardize its native biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services, such as water regulation and carbon sequestration.

Our Work
With the aim of ensuring the conservation of biodiversity and the ecological functions of this endemic biome—that is, one that is only present in this region of the planet—we seek to promote forms of land use that allow the natural landscape and its biodiversity to coexist with sustainable and prosperous human activities. We are studying the area and building relationships with local agencies, civil society organizations, producers, and the community at large to find appropriate mechanisms to protect the caldén forest, integrating the perspectives of all stakeholders.
Achievements
We plan to work together collaboratively to develop effective tools for preserving functioning ecosystems, such as regenerative livestock practices and promoting coexistence with wildlife. We also aspire to contribute to environmental outreach and education, strengthening protected areas, and effective management of public policies for fire management, among other initiatives.
